The base is chromed plastic which is in the description, and it is a bit noisy, but all in all it performs well and is better than buying a separate blender and processor. The blending blades have a little problem with leaf spinach , kale and greens but des well with berries. The food processor did ok but has a bit of a problem with harder veggies such as carrots.
