I shouldn’t complain about chilly mornings here in Los Angeles. I know it could be WAY worse. But I’m still cold! And juicing doesn’t help matters… I don’t know about you all, but when I’m cold, a warm bowl of breakfast cereal— like my childhood favorite, Cream of Wheat— sounds so comforting. Even if I’m not having it for breakfast. And even if there’s not really a drop of wheat in that bowl. 1 cup raw jicama rice, strained (I used leftover sushi rice!) 1/2 cup almond milk liquid stevia, to taste For a more authentic porridge, toss the jicama rice and almond milk in a blender– and “pulse” it a couple times to thicken-up the texture, like that of a cooked breakfast cereal. You can skip this step to make the process faster, though! In a small saucepot, add all the ingredients and heat over medium-high, until the porridge starts to bubble. Cook until most of the moisture has been absorbed, and adjust the spices and sweetness, to taste.
I like mine with LOTS of cinnamon! The jicama is naturally sweet, too, so you don’t need to go overboard with the stevia. Unless of course, you want to. The topping possibilities are endless, too.
Raisins, walnuts, sliced bananas… they’d all be tasty additions! You could even try a savory variation using cauliflower rice. Sounds like the perfect Southern comfort food to me. : What do you crave when it’s cold outside? Did you eat warm breakfast cereals often?Happy 4th of July and Happy SUMMER!  Make sure to come visit the Stern Chiropractic booth at the Lincolnshire Red, White & Boom 5K on the morning of July 4th (click HERE for details). We are in the middle of summer and fresh vegetables and fruits are abundant.  All the wonderful farmer’s markets are around and hopefully you or your friends have your own gardens (I am very fortunate to have wonderful friends with wonderful gardens – as I do NOT have a green thumb).  All these GREAT vegetables provide an excellent opportunity to create light, refreshing and nutritious meals. (Make sure to read all the way down to the bottom to see this months Healthy Lifestyles Educational Program on Juicing).
Are you looking for healthier meal options?  You know vegetables and fruits are good for you but you just don’t enjoy them as much as other foods.  Have you heard great things about juicing your meals but did not know how to get started or if you would even like it.  Well juicing is a GREAT option for the whole family and is much easier than you may think. I have been juicing vegetables for breakfast for years and get many questions on: Note: I am not a fan of juicing fruit.  It tastes great and is okay once in a while but as related to your health, fruit juice, even freshly juiced, tends to be more sugar then you need and better health benefits could be gained by just eating the fruit. I started my juicing using a Jack LaLanne juicer which is a centrifugal juicer.  It was very good but I burned it out when trying to primarily juice greens and wheat grass (learned through experience that it was the wrong style for what I wanted to do).  I now use an Omega 8003.
I chose this juicer because my research showed it to be high quality, able to juice leafy greens and wheat grass (which I very much enjoy and is very healthy) and was an exceptionally good value. I encourage you to look around, explore, do your research and choose the best juicer for you. There are 2 main types of juicers: NOTE: Many people think juicing sounds awesome, enjoy the juice and health benefits but end up not continuing for 1 reason or another.  I encourage you to start with a less expensive juicer to see if you like it and if you will continue to use it or even better, find a friend who is no longer using theirs and borrow it.  You may be surprised how many people have tried it. What you juice is up to you and should be determined by what you like and why you are juicing but certainly start with vegetables that you like. Green Leafy Vegetables are a great source of B vitamins (vital for your body), calcium, magnesium and many other vitamins and nutrients.
Colorful Vegetables offer many vitamins and lots of antioxidants Ginger, Garlic and Onions offer many health benefits for heart health, digestion and anti-inflammatory, just to name a few. As mentioned above, regular consumption of fruit juice tends not to be the healthiest of choices but certainly can be tasty and enjoyable.  Commonly, people will mix fruits and vegetables to sweeten the juice and this is an excellent alternative. Juicing all vegetables is what I choose to do and can be done in a way that creates a very tasty and very healthy juice.  I have selected my favorite recipe based on the nutrients I feel I need and then played with it until it tasted good. My Breakfast Includes the Following: Lacinato Kale (a wonderful deep green veggie with lots of B vitamins) NOTE: Make sure to drink your juice right away, the nutrients and enzymes start to degrade when stored for later if exposed to light and oxygen. There are many resources on the net for recipes and nutritional content of the juice just make sure to have fun with it and ENJOY!
