We are pleased with the results. It does take slightly longer to accomplish the desired results outlined in the instructions. Overall, I am quite satisfied! Yes () No ()  Report Yes () No () Verified purchaser I read the reviews for this & it was rated in the top three. It's easy to care for & the fan being on the top is great because it prevents food from dropping into it, etc. I bought two additional trays along with The Dehydrator Bible which is well written. Since receiving this unit, I have quickly gotten hooked on dehydrating food.
Fruit like bananas & apples taste better than you can get them at the store even if they are not hard like the ones in the store. It does the job well. I saw a dehydrator at another store for a lot less money, but it did not look to be the same quality as this one. The trays are dishwasher safe if done using the top rack, but I prefer to wash & dry them by hand. Ordering additional trays is also the thing to do as it takes a lot of produce to make a good batch of banana or apple chips which go faster than you can dry them. I got this as a birthday gift from my husband & I have really enjoyed using it since receiving it. Yes () No (1)  Report Yes () No (1) Verified purchaser Verified purchaser I've used the machine twice since I purchased it. It worked flawlessly both times. I used it to make jerky starting with about 3 lbs. of meat. The thin strips (1/8 to 3/16 inch , thick) dried in about 5 hours. Thicker pieces up to 3/8 inch thick took 8 to 10 hours. The 4 hour time advertised is not realistic unless you are drying something paper thin.
I treat the grates with canola cooking spray before loading them with meat. The easiest way to clean them is by using a brush of some type and dish washing detergent. Cleaning them is not a real problem since the meat doesn't stick to them and what little marinade does, brushes off quickly. The lack of an off on switch is not a problem because you're going to load it, set the temperature, plug it in, and leave it run for the required time. When it's running, it's nearly silent. The unit is well made and seems durable enough to to last a long time with any reasonable handling. I'm looking forward to getting a lot of use from this dryer Yes () No (5)  Report Yes () No (5) Verified purchaser I have been using this dehydrator for two weeks now EVERY DAY experimenting with fruits and veggies. Very pleased so far. Beyond easy to use. Already wish I had ordered additional drying trays but will take of that soon. Enjoying this so far. Using to make light weight items for hiking and easy storage at home and camping. Yes (7) No (0)  Report Yes (7) No (0) I don't want to act like a food dehydrating expert. In total, I own four of these units and I bought them so I could make healthier snack items. All of mine are 12 tray units. I have read that it is recommended when you have this many your supposed to rotate the trays out once in a while.
I've had fairly good luck with these and they're easy to clean. I just soak mine in water and swirl them around before wiping them down and rinsing them. I just let mine air dry. The nicest part about these dehydrators is that they're heated. Maybe that's not necessary but I'm sure it helps with the drying time. It comes with 5 trays but Walmart carries the expansion trays. You can upgrade right away, over time, or not at all its up to you. It's just nice that you have that flexibility. I couldn't be happier with this machine. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and moderately priced. Made in the USA on top of that. Yes () No (3)  Report Yes () No (3) After reading many food dehydrator reviews, watching several video reviews with comments, compared dehydrator designs in the store, and compared several different manufacturers products for food capacity, and features, i.e.: has several trays, expandable design (from 1 to 12 trays)(box designs are not expandable), thermostat control, full heat range (90F to 160F), ease of cleanup
, relatively durable design (only stainless steel is more durable $$$), uniformity of heat and air flow (better than the box designs), clean color (white), low power consumption (is 600W versus 1000W), low noise level, low frequency of recall (0), and low price, and the excellent Walmart return policy, this product seemed to be the best choice; and now, after using it for a while for a casual one batch of 5 trays per day, it has proven to be the best choice for us. If you need an on/off power switch, we use a small outlet plug-in toggle switch. Yes () No (4)  Report Yes () No (4) Verified purchaser Bought the Oster FPSTDH0101 at Walmart the week before - it was awful. Read reviews and everyone said to hurry and return it and get the Nesco instead. I did, and I'm thrilled! The Nesco doesn't sound like I'm in an airport (as did the Oster), it dehydrates fairly evenly for a home-use machine, comes with fruit leather trays and small-food trays. I didn't understand from the product description that it would come with 5 dehydrating trays, 2 small-food trays and 2 fruit leather trays, so I'm happy with the extras.
I will be purchasing more trays because it seems that no matter what I do, I always want more space. The fruit leather with pureed strawberries was a hit with the kids-next door! A 16 oz pck of fresh strawberries makes 1.5 oz of dehydrated. I agree that it needs an on/off switch, but I solved that by plugging it into a power strip with an on/off switch, otherwise you have to unplug it every time you want to check. Yes () No (2)  Report Yes () No (2) Verified purchaser For years I owned an American Harvester dehydrator. It finally gave out recently and I had to look for a replacement. After all of the searching and reading I chose this model because of the higher wattage, 5 trays and included screen and fruit roll sheet. It can take up to 12 trays. I bought all of the extra trays for my old unit but rarely seemed to use more than 4 or 5 at a time. One improvement over older models is the fan at the top. It makes cleanup so much easier. The older models had the fan at the bottom and food would fall down into the fan on occasion.
You could shake it out but it was still a pain to clean. This model has flat piece of plastic under all of the trays that can easily be washed with the trays. The handle on top is nice too. So far I've made jerky with the enclosed spice packets (a little peppery for me but good), dried pineapple and mushrooms. This summer I will dry some tomatoes and peppers. The time to dry depends on what you are drying, the thickness of the slices, how heavily you load the unit and ambient humidity. I am happy with this unit and am hoping it lasts as long as my last one did. Yes () No ()  Report Yes () No () Verified purchaser This dehydrator is so quiet! It works well, and without having to rotate the trays. Everything cleans up so easily, too. I love that it has the specific temperature settings, but I do wish it had a timer on it also. I've read the reviews and have seen that others have solved this problem by plugging the dehydrator into a timer. I plan to do the same thing but it hasn't been enough of a problem for me to actually go out and buy one yet.
I did make beef jerky and went by a recipe I found online. I let the jerky go for about half the time it was supposed to and it was already very dry. So I do recommend watching the food you are drying until you get used to how this machine works. I would definitely recommend this dehydrator. Yes (4) No (0)  Report Yes (4) No (0) Verified purchaser Verified purchaser I love it! I enjoyed using my friend's dehydrator which was the same brand, but a 400. She wanted it back-although I really wasn't done with it-so I needed my own. The Nesco 600 had very good reviews and is very similar to the 400; so I already knew how easy it was to clean and use. The 600 has temperature control which tells for what things each temperature is recommended for written right on the machine- which is very nice- while the Nesco 400 only had one temperature. I doubt that I would use it to make jerky, but it has the capability, and I might surprise myself! I'm using it a lot this fall for apples, pears, and herbs.
