Will clog and not work well after a while with Dark Roasts on finest grind setting. I've used this happily for about 3 weeks and then found that it sounded more and more laboured and resulting grind came out in clumps. It then quit working for more than a few seconds before the overheating kicked in and machine stopped. I found that under the conical burr grinder, the small area where the grounds will go clogs up (really packs in) when it's a very fine grind. This is not an area that is easy (or maybe even possible) to completely clean and involves a good banging of the machine or use of pipe cleaners to unclog. Other that that, the only other issue I had was that using a 51mm portafilter, the grounds would spill all over the base of the machine. My solution was to always use a double filter and only fill half full for a single shot. Not a big deal. I'll be returning the machine today, getting another one and seeing if I end up with the same problem. Thanks to Best Buy's 30 day return policy, I'm chancing it hoping that this works out.
I would love for this grinder to work but don't' see how with my fine grind, dark roast preference how anything but a better design would work since the alternative machines that would work are 2-3 times more expensive. BEWARE OF FALSE PRESENTATION!!! This coffee grinder is actually made in China and not Canada as stated in the spec's Could not believe the difference! I have mostly used a blade grinder up until now and was very sceptical when I read an online blog stating that they were the worst kind of grinder to use. It put enough doubt into my mind that I began researching other grinders and settled on the Breville, which I subsequently ordered. I was curious to see if a burr grinder made a difference in the coffee. There was a lot I liked about it. It is compact, gives a wide range of grinds from coarse to very fine, timing and portion control and it looks good too. I used it the first time with my regular blend of coffee beans for morning coffee and was immediately amazed at the smoothness of the coffee.
My wife even asked me if I had changed the bean blend. The flavour was smoother, more balanced and better tasting coffee was the outcome. Needless to say, my blade grinder is now resting at the back of the cupboard. So the bottom line is I am very pleased with, not only the operation of this grinder, but also the major improvement in the taste of our coffee. For the price this is a great grinder. It is very easy to use and they found the perfect grind too.If you are going to buy an espresso machine over $300, you need to buy a good grinder. This is how you control the taste of the coffee. Bought this as a gift and they absolutely love it. Really looks good on the counter next to their espresso machine. It is absolutely AMAZING I've had the delonghi burr grinder and the conical breville burr grinder, but this is the BEST of the three. If you are deciding whether or not it is worth investing $100-200 on a burr grinder, I guarantee you that it is the best decision you will make.
