Try telling that to Danielle Hausberg. Before the sociology major moved to University of Western Ontario from Los Angeles, she never cooked for herself. Hausberg realized dining out wasn’t financially or nutritionally savvy. So — using her mom’s tasty cooking as inspiration — she decided to tackle her own meals and created the Instagram account @CollegeCookin.
“I started taking pictures of the meals I would cook and send them to my parents just to prove to them that I was shockingly making my own food,” Hausberg says. “Then, because of the collection of pictures I had overtime gathered, my friend gave me the idea to start an Instagram account, and it started from there. Yummy salad idea for those vegetarians out there! Tuscan kale, tofu, orange bell pepper, avocado, pomegranate seeds! I dressed it with a Dijon mustard vinaigrette 💚 A photo posted by college-cookin (@college.cookin) on Mar 23, 2015 at 10:36am PDT Since its start in November 2013, CollegeCookin has gained over 500,000 followers. Scrolling through the CollegeCookin feed reveals a bright array of appealing dishes like Caprese salad, healthy banana chocolate chip muffins and boiled salmon. Recipes for some of the featured meals are available in a $5 eBook that was released in August 2014. RELATED: How to stay healthy regardless of your meal plan
In addition to the eBook, Hausberg teamed up with Disney to promote the Helen Mirren culinary movie The Hundred Foot Journey. In the movie, a restaurant owner hires prospective chefs based upon their ability to make an omelette. Hausberg was tasked with making her own version of the omelette and attended private screening of the film at Universal Studios. “It was so surreal to be there,” Hausberg says. “I couldn’t believe that my Instagram account had brought me to be at a screening in Universal sponsored by Disney. I Hausberg is still a full-time student while running CollegeCookin, which she says can be challenging. “It hasn’t been easy being able to balance schoolwork with CollegeCookin,” Hausberg says. “I notice that I was definitely able to get a lot more work done this summer when I devoted all of my attention to the account.” The student says she’s somehow finding a way to make it all happen, though. “I try to organize my schedule so that I have classes on a fewer amount of days so that I can devote my offtime and weekends to Instagram,” Hausberg says. “What is easy, though, is that I am posting content of what I actually eat, so whenever I make something I try to photograph it.” While most Instagram users have indulged in posting a food pic, not many can rake in 5,000 likes on a snapshot of their lunch. Hausberg says interest in CollegeCookin started to pick up in January of 2014, and hitting 10,000 followers was a huge milestone. She says she never imagined reaching the half-mil mark. I never set out goals or intentions when I started the page, it was just a fun sort of hobby for me to post my photos, and then when more and more followers came, it transitioned into a job and I started to take it more seriously – taking better pictures, writing out fuller captions, and trying to engage more with my followers to post content they liked to see.” Katie Stec and Melissa Gallagher — both sophomores studying nutrition and dietetics at West Chester University — say CollegeCookin is inspiring for students striving for health. “The recipes include a lot of fresh produce and other ingredients, which I think is great because it is really hard to come by at the school dining hall,” says Stec. “It also makes eating healthy foods look more appealing and fun to maybe those who think, ‘If it’s healthy it must taste bad or boring,’ and this account clearly shows otherwise.” “Her account is inspiring to eat healthier meals in college because she portrays them in her pictures to all be delicious,” Gallagher says.
Some students may be challenged by the recipes, says Gallagher. “For the average college-aged cook, some of the meals look a little too in-depth with the ingredients used,” Gallagher says. Hausberg says she recognizes how hard it is to make health a priority when working with a college-sized wallet. “It is definitely a challenge to keep healthy meals fit within a college budget,” Hausberg says. “But what I have found is that sometimes if you want to spend more on a healthy ingredient, you might have to sacrifice other things that college students will likely spend money on instead.” Hausberg has some tips for those struggling with the balance: buy in bulk, keep an eye on the sales, don’t purchase what you won’t use to avoid waste and freeze as much as you can. While Hausberg has been utilizing Instagram as a job through CollegeCookin, she runs another account, @HausnHome, to show her love for fashion, styling and interior design. As for the future of CollegeCookin, Hausberg says she’d like to work with more brands and possibly create an app.
